Yeah, this is a surprise. Happy Birthday Frank and the end of Zappadan. Only ever seen as a VCD before! :)

jazzfromhell's notes:
Found my 1st gen VHS of Stockholm recently and spent a lot of time trying to transfer the recording. The tape was severely damaged so that the audio was basically unusable, with dropouts every few seconds.
Anyway, I managed to get the best possible MPEG-2 after numerous attempts and FTP'd it to unicrayon.

unicrayon's notes:
There were a LOT of gaps in the video and songs missing but it's probably the best we'll ever get so it's probably worth having a definitive version the first time :D
Replaced the damaged audio with our SBD. Filled in all the video gaps with animation. Created the 2 DVDs.

Here's the longer version if you ever want to try this at home.

First you have to line up all the SBD audio with the damaged audio in a sound editor only using the waveforms. When you try to match analogue recordings, the speed will fluctuate throughout all sources. Since your eye can pick out sync issues at 1/25th of a second, the SBD audio will only sync up with the video when you've speed corrected everything to 1/100th cts. The Walrus SBD synched at +12.85 cts and Peaches -31.81 cts, but Stairway had 10 separate SCs and Loops came in second with 9!
Anyway, all the SC'd SBD audio tracks give you the exact song length so you can resync the video and the new audio in a video editing suite.
So, after I lined up more than 20 video clips, I was left with a lot of gaps to fill where the videographer paused.
So, I grabbed 4 Gb of random footage and created 60 Gb of acid trip VJ animation that runs to around 30 minutes. It's pretty much the same style as FZ's early film work using the method he used to create the Video From Hell.
Then, I started editing the more interesting parts into the gaps, this took a couple of long days/nights and challenged my visual and mental health so I took a couple of days off :)
I rendered out the new MPEG-2 and started making the DVDs.

BengoFury said "You're crazy to spend 70 hours on this when people will only watch it once" ... "I am", I replied, "I only thought it would take only take 30!"

Frank Zappa live on BBC 1968 - 1DVD

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention
BBC Studios
London
England

1968 10 23

Lineage:
BBC Master > VHS > DVD > Authoring

Track list:
King Kong
In The Sky
Apathy Interview

Mintypinto's notes
OK folks, so here's the story. Just over 15 years ago I had a friend doing some research work at the BBC, I gave her a short shopping list of things that I would love to see her raid the archive for and amazingly she came up trumps with a few selections.
The 23 minute session that FZ and the MOI did at the BBC in London.
Now the ridiculous bit of the story.
The video tape supplied to me was of fantastic quality, a dupe taken from the master and put on to VHS. I kept the video for years and watched it a few times, amazing playing, the band are in top form, JCB and Art Tripp keep up a tremendous rhythm with Roy Estrada and all solos from the band are great.
About 5 years ago I got a friend to digitize the tape to DVD along with a load of other stuff that I had recorded off TV, he did a pretty good job and I was so pleased with it that I threw the VHS copy away.
Of course as time has gone by, technology has got better and better to the point where I could have made a better copy on my £150 TV DVD Harddrive recorder.
Dohhh!
Anyway, if you have a fantastic copy of this already, don't download this but share your copy with us all.
If you have a good copy of this, download this one, it may be better.
And if you have a poor copy or worse still, don't have it at all, this download is mandatory. It's brilliant.
Incidently, I noticed at 20 minutes a very quick fade in and out of sound, the band go from King Kong to another track which to the untrained ear may sound like a segue but it ain't. This implies the band played for longer then is on the tape but this is all I was supplied with. My guess is that the edit was done at the time and what ended up in the BBC archive was all that was left.
Still, we are lucky to have this much great video, fortunately the cameraman were not trying to imitate a bad acid trip by pull focusing and zooming in and out all the time as was the style of the day so what we get is a fairly well shot recording of FZ and the Mothers at the top of their game.

unicrayon's notes
Extracted the King Kong section from the DVD, added ZT branding and menu and authored the DVD without transcoding.
Extracted the In The Sky and Apathy section from the DVD and added it to the DVD without transcoding.

Poor try to make an DVD from my videos of this concert, well it might be done a new version somehow, sometime!
On this DVD I have 18 videos, none are named or anything, it comes as it is. Thought I should share what I got.
I have noticed that, when it's played in vlc, I have to adjust the video to 4:3 format! Othervise as I said, the quality of sound/image isn't pefect, but it's a memory and for those that was there I suppose it's a minor problem!

Frank Zappa "Just Another Band From LA second LP" - 1CD

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
"Just Another Band From L.A.", second (unreleased) LP
Remastered Edition

Frank Zappa had originally envisioned "Just Another Band From L.A." as a double album.
Acetates of this album were pressed and given to the band members.  For whatever reasons,
plans for that 2 LP set were abandoned and they went with the single LP that we know
and love.

A significant difference in "Billy the Mountain" was that Zappa removed an 8:51 section of
singing and solos in order to fit it onto a single side of an LP.  The 33:38 original was
now only 24:47.

I've taken the circulating copy of that second LP and tried to improve it somewhat.  Using
iZotope's RX, I applied moderate declicking to remove some of the clicks and crackles from
the acetate copy.  (It was actually fairly clean already.)  I also removed a low level
15735Hz VHS HiFi modulation signal (indicating that the acetate was probably recorded onto
a VHS recorder).  I then used iZotope's Ozone 3 to more closely match the acetate's EQ to
that of the Rykodisc CD.

Most importantly though, I've also created an extract from "Billy the Mountain Pt. 2" of
just the material cut from the original version.  Those comfortable with audio editors
can simply drop this extract into the released version to recreate the full length track.
Because of the EQ matching, the edit is near seamless.

Track List:

   1. Studebaker Hoch~Billy The Mountain Pt.2 [RM]  13:57
   2. The Subcutaneous Peril (1970-10-11) [RM]  5:19
   3. An Easy Substitute For Eternity Itself (1970-10-11) [RM]  20:23
   4. Billy The Mountain (extract)  8:51

"Billy the Mountain" was recorded on August 7, 1971, at Pauley Pavilion, UCLA, CA.
"The Subcutaneous Peril" and "An Easy Substitute" were recorded at Carnegie Hall on
October 11, 1971.

From Zappa's notes, this is what the original intended album would have looked like.

Side One
   1. "Call Any Vegetable" (Zappa)  7:22
   2. "Eddie, Are You Kidding?" (Kaylan, Seiler, Volman, Zappa)  3:09
   3. "Magdalena" (Kaylan, Zappa)  6:24
   4. "Dog Breath" (Zappa)  3:37

Side Two
   1. "Billy the Mountain" (Zappa)  19:41

12-Feb 1979, Apollo Theater, Manchester, England
133 min, SBD, A+
150 min, Aud, B+
The SBD cuts in Pound For A Brown. Deathless Horsie, Five-Five-Five)

This version: 149:00 min, SBD/Aud, A+/B+

The SBD is used up through 8:58 into Pound For A Brown, from there on it's from an Aud tape of unknown generation, with a whole lot of compression on it. Throughout the board recording, the levels are very high, and clipped peaks are in abundance. Strangely enough, I'm not sure this has harmed the sound quality, which is among the best you'll ever hear on a Zappa boot. This version doesn't have any of the problems that previously circulating copies had.

Notes:
The Walk source has common overlap material, but includes an additional minute of "Village Of The Sun". The only reason I can think of is that the 1st gen is really a 2nd gen and the missing portion of "Village" was accidentally excluded during dubbing from a common 1st gen.

Notes from the taper's helper:

I had the fortune to see Frank a half dozen times of which this event was one.  While it's not board quality sound, it has its own charm given the time frame and what was available for recording at the time. Kick back and a story I will tell.

It was a dark and stormy night - ok, in honesty, it was a great night.  The Nakamichi was actually owned by a friend of mine, Adam (I don't know the model - but it was considered a professional cassette portable recorder and one of the better models available).  He was in the UF College of Broadcast Journalism and he also was a Deadhead, who loved to record the Dead - hence, the good Nakamichi cassette recorder (we used CRO2 cassette tape).  Being a musician, I had a pair of Beyer dynamic mics I used in performance (good quality mics at the time).  We managed to get the mics and recorder into the venue, the Old Florida Gym, in a knapsack.  We knew a lot of the tech people working that night for Student Government Productions, showed up early, and we were ushered in without being frisked.  That night at the concert, Frank's bodyguard busted seven people I counted trying to record.  We sat in the eighth row center left. The first piece of music you hear starts in after Frank had started playing - we had a little difficulty once switching tape in the dark and accidentally put the first tape in backwards thus erasing before we caught our error -not a lot of music lost, but, arghhh!  The rustle you hear about halfway through the first track is me putting the mics up each sleeve of my denim jacket to avoid being detected by said bodyguard.  I mean really, who is going to notice a crazy guy holding up both arms in the air for two hours of a Zappa concert?

I lost track of Adam years ago, he has the original tape and I have a dupe we did to CRO2 tape that night after the concert. Some of the material Frank played that night had not yet been released (Heavenly Bank Account, etc.).  I called the concert 'Artichokes and Steaks' because at some point you'll hear a friend of mine wishing he had some artichokes and steaks - and I thought to myself, that sounds like a title Frank would use.  Out of respect for Frank's livelihood and any possible litigation, we kept the recordings to ourselves and/or, at least I have through the years.  I only played those tapes maybe three times through the years until I digitized the recordings.

There are 3 cassette tapes in total, which is why there are some noticeable gaps evident as we switched to a new cassette to continue recording the concert.  I used a Yamaha MT44 multitrack cassette recorder to play back the tapes through an Echo Layla card (16-bit 44.1 kHz digital multitrack interface for PC - circa 1998-1999) into my PC.  The software I used was Syntrillium's Cool Edit Pro (now called Adobe Audition, since Adobe purchased Syntrillium).  I used Samplitude Mastering software to create the CD disks.  When Mr. Arouh told me he liked Zappa, I decided enough time had passed and so I made him a copy.

Frank Zappa 1975 'Orchestral Favorites' sessions - 1CD

Here's a little surprise: a set of outtakes from the Orchestral Favorites sessions, much of it previously uncirculated. Black Napkins and Rollo have been in circulation for many years but I believe the versions herein to be upgrades.

Here's a quick rundown on the featured tracks and how they differ to the released versions:

01 Strictly Genteel (totally different take, with differences in orchestration)
02 Duke Of Prunes (no guitar solo; just backing tracks)
03 Black Napkins (from Sep. 18 concert, unreleased)
04 Rollo (longer edit than on QuAUDIOPHILIAc; 42 secs more at the beginning)
05 Pedro's Dowry (possibly differences in mix compared to OF version)
06 Naval Aviation In Art? (no difference to OF version)

More analysis of these outtakes and how they compare to Orchestral Favorites is very welcome!

~~ from fzmoi69 Master Audience tape ~~

Parts of the original Audience Master recording are heavily affected by drop out flaws (in one channel or both) due to recording microphone or cable connection troubles,
especially over most of the first tape (both sides).
As a result most parts in which one channel was flawed have been turned to mono (copying intact channel to other),
other parts in which both channels are dropping out
(i.e. large sections in Black Napkins, Society Pages Medley, Sinister Footwear, shorter spots in other tracks, see setlist) had to be filled with material from alternate source material (Yojimbo SBD).
