Notes:
JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70's and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. Volume 12 consists of a partial recording made of Zappa's stop in Seattle in early 74 by Dave's brother. The recording is mono but very good sounding. He only had a single side of a 90 minute cassette tape to work with so this was all that was captured.

FZ on an interview from the 1992 Zappa! tribute magazine (Keyboard and Guitar Player):

Actually, the first time I had any of it ["serious" music] performed was at Mount St. Mary's College in 1962. I spent $300 and got together a college orchestra, and I put on this little concert. Maybe less than a hundred people showed up for it, but the thing was actually taped and broadcast by KPFK. (...) By the time I graduated from high school in '58, I still hadn't written any rock and roll songs, although I had a little rock and roll band in my senior year. I didn't write any rock and roll stuff until I was in my 20s. All the music writing that I was doing was either chamber music or orchestral, and none of it ever got played until this concert at Mount St. Mary's.
Rip Rense on the liner notes of The Lost Episodes:

It took place in 1963 at, of all pastoral places, lovely Mount St. Mary's College, a private Catholic institution perched in the lush Santa Monica Mountains above West Los Angeles. (...) The program included a piece called "Opus 5," aleatoric works that required some improvisation, a piece for orchestra and taped electronic music, with accompanying visuals in the form of FZ's own experimental 8mm films (Motorhead Sherwood described one such film depicting the Los Angeles County Fair carnival, double exposed with passing telephone poles).

Sony TC-152SD Tape Recorder

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community.

~~ From 4th gen stage recording ~~

The next in our series of Toronto '69 upgrades, one of the famous Don Preston stage recordings. An entertaining show with much audience interaction and MOI antics. FZ's voice is barely audible, but because of the relative cleanness of this version, it's possible to boost the volume in the quiet parts.
My 4th gen was lacking the tuning-up section, which I've added from an unknown gen tape.

portions left untouched (no speed correction) in:
- Hungry Freaks Daddy
- Kung Fu
- King Kong (around 18:00-22:00)
- Sleeping In A Jar
Also, other parts of this recording still may be sounding rather 'shaky'
in spite of countless attempts to get these straightened out.

Frank Zappa "Chalk Pie" - 1CD - unreleased album

Frank Zappa
unreleased album
1982 "Chalk Pie" (?)
70 min, A+

This is the unreleased precursor to SATLTSADW and MFU, probably leaked out by a former band member. Many people have said that they prefer the mixes on many of these versions to the released ones. This was transferred from my tape by Patrick Neve, and the sound gets a bit "darker" on tape side B (from Jazz Discharge). I think this was the case with my cassette (which I can't locate at the moment) as well, but if anyone has an upgrade for this part, it's very welcome.

01 Drowning Witch
02 Envelopes
03 Teenage Prostitute (SATLTSADW versions, with some differences)
04 Dangerous Kitchen (Armadillo, Austin, Tx, 16-Oct 1980, diff mix than MFU)
05 Chalk Pie (Salt Lake City, Ut, 7-Dec 1981, same as on Guitar)
06 We're Turning Again (SLC, 7-Dec 1981 and/or SMCA 12/11/81 #1)
07 Alien Orifice (q: Inca Roads) (SLC, 7-Dec 1981 and/or SMCA 12/11/81 #1)
08 The Jazz Discharge Party Hats (possibly Carbondale, Il, 11/15/80. Diff mix than MFU)
09 Torture Never Stops Guitar Solo (fall 1980)
10 What's New In Baltimore? (Same as on FZMMOP but full guitar solo)
11 Moggio (Basic tracks from Chicago, 27-Nov 1981, show #2)
12 Black Page Guitar Solo (San Diego Civic Center, 12-Dec 1981, show #1)
13 Clownz On Velvet (w/Al di Meola, Ritz 17-Nov 1981)
14 Frogs With Dirty Little Lips (w/Ahmet, Santa Monica, 11-Dec 1981)

~~ From unknown gen audience tape ~~

Yet another very listenable recording from Germany 1976. Unfortunately, it seems like there was some kind of time restraint, so the show is short, leaving us with no Chunga's and no Zoot.
I believe it was taped on a C-120, and the tape flip in Advance Romance seems to be the only cut with music missing. I hope I haven't missed any other cuts. Most of the recording is stereo, but for some reason, 23 min of the show (starting in the Enema Bandit solo, and ending before the encores) are mono.

Sony TC-152SD Tape Recorder
Sony ECM-99 Stereo Microphone
Maxell cassettes
